Dancing With Monks

Soundcheck | May 3, 2010
Retrospectives help us get to the roots of revolutionary artists. This year, performers all over the world will be celebrating the 40 year career of a performing arts revolutionary: Meredith Monk, composer, vocalist, choreographer and filmmaker. She comes by the studio to walk us through her roots as the fourth generation of singers in her family, and to bring us up to date on her cutting edge commissions. She’s joined by a radical from the dance world, choreographer and dancer Bill T. Jones, who claims Monk as one of his performing arts heroes, and who will be participating in the upcoming kick-off celebration called Dance to Monk. Also on the program, the choreographer Garth Fagan, who has created works for Broadway as well as for the ballet, inspired by music from Johannes Brahms to Thelonius Monk and recently joined forces with Wynton Marsalis and the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra
