#3773: Choral Music from Latvia and Estonia
Listen to choral music from the Baltic region on this New Sounds, specifically, from Latvia and Estonia. Hear music by Estonian composers Veljo Tormis, and Arvo Pärt, as well as a Latvian choir singing Estonian music, in a work by Arvo Pärt. Then, there’s music for choir and wine glasses from Estonian Eriks Esenvalds, as performed by the British mixed vocal octet Voces8.
Listen to nostalgic, but somewhat bleak music from Latvian composer Maija Einfelde, as sung by the Latvian Radio Choir. Einfelde sets poetry by Vilis Plūdons, with the choir accompanied by an unusual combination of clarinet, harp and bells. The Latvian Radio Choir also sings music by Gavin Bryars, from his "On Photography."
Then, hear music by Latvian composer Peteris Vasks, as sung by the Irish Youth Chamber Choir which sings of the eternal, and of nature, of our earth, in a work which translates as "Mother Sun." Arvo Pärt’s Estonian Lullaby closes the show. (Note: Arvo Pärt turned 80 this year.)
