Dropout makes Good

Soundcheck | May 3, 2010
With "Late Registration," Rapper Kanye West has the number-one selling album in the country. This comes even after he incited controversy last week by going off-script at a charity telethon and declaring that "George Bush doesn't care about black people." Today, we're joined by Danyel Smith, a novelist and former editor at Vibe, to look at West's music and popularity, which started with his debut album "College Dropout." Also: Composer and keyboardist Anthony Coleman became associated with the avant-garde and klezmer-oriented jazz coming out of downtown circles in the '80s and '90s. But he's also got a taste for old-school jazz. Today, he stops by to perform solo piano works by one of his musical influences, ragtime great Jelly Roll Morton.
