#3901: Music for the Days of the Week
For this New Sounds, there’s music for each of the seven days of the week from different composers, styles and genres.
Hear music for chamber band by Florent Ghys, the French-born bass player and composer. It’s from his latest record, Bonjour, which combines basses, cello, guitars, drumkit, pitched percussion, melodica, and voices to make jazz-laced indie pop, and music that can feel woozy, off-kilter and “art-damaged.” The tunes are named the way that ragas are assigned definite times of the day, during which the music would be at the height of its melodic beauty; there’s a work here on Bonjour for every day of the week but Saturday. Luckily, there’s also experimental electronic/post-rock from L.A. with music by Seven Saturdays to complete the cycle for this show.
There’s traditional music of the Mediterranean (France, Greece and the near East) featuring a quartet called Thrace, consisting of cello, lyra, and percussion. Listen to an excerpt from their brand-new record Sunday Morning Sessions. Also, listen to music for Monday by Australian-born England-based composer Leah Kardos, who is a music professor and project leader at the Visconti Studio at Kingston University London. Then, hear the Swedish jazz piano trio, e.s.t. (esbjörn svensson trio), who borrow from classical, rock, pop, and techno, with their selection, “Tuesday Wonderland.”
Rounding out the show is a portion of German mastermind Karlheinz Stockhausen's Licht (Light) a cycle of seven "operas" or musical theater rituals, written between 1977 and 2003, each named after the days of the week. Freitag (Friday) concludes with an hour long electronic postlude, and we’ll hear an excerpt from the “Friday Farewell” realized by Joe Drew. (Request Joe Drew’s NYU PhD dissertation on Stockhausen's Licht.)
