#3918: With Roger Goula

New Sounds | Dec 26, 2017

Hear post-classical-leaning electronica by Spanish-born, London-based composer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Roger Goula, for this New Sounds.

Goula, for his latest recording, “Overview Effect,” takes under consideration the perspective of astronauts and cosmonauts while viewing the Earth from orbit, from between the Earth and the Moon, or from the lunar surface. Many off-world travelers have reported back a shift in awareness, along with a greater concern and understanding for the "fragile ball of life" that is our planet. With this focal point, Goula skillfully manipulates electronics and classical string instrumentation, to create a cinematic and stirring musical worldview.

Goula has a background in classical and jazz guitar, and studied in Barcelona. His music considers Renaissance and Baroque music, as well as minimalism, and he has even moved in free improv circles, with guitar, ukulele, & live processing. Goula has also done work for film scores, among them the score for “Next Goal Wins,” which was host John Schaefer’s introduction to Roger Goula’s music. Hear selections from “Overview Effect,” and a conversation with the composer, recorded on location in London.

Plus, listen to music by violist and composer Jocelyn Pook from a collaborative dance score, “iTMOi (in the mind of igor).”
