#4000: New Sounds Live, The First 30 Years
For this show, listen to highlights from the first 30 years of New Sounds Live events. There's music ranging from the otherworldly sounds of throat singing courtesy of David Hykes to big brass bands from Macedonia - namely the Kocani Orkestar, from a trombone shout choir- the McCollough Sons of Thunder, to Brazilian-Japanese bossa nova grooves, listen to music recorded from all around the city when New Sounds has taken its show on the road.
The very first New Sounds Live was in September of 1986 at Merkin Concert Hall, and featured David Hykes and the Harmonic Choir with music from the groundbreaking Hearing Solar Winds. Hear a portion of that work, along with film composer Joceyln Pook's "Tango for Corrugated Iron," as recorded at the World Financial Center (now Brookfield Place.) Then, listen to a collaboration from the Palestinian oud player Simon Shaheen and the trumpet player Frank London, leader of the Klezmatics, with their bands, from a 1993 New Sounds Live concert at Merkin Hall.
There's also music from Ryuichi Sakamoto, Paula & Jacques Morelenbaum, their gentle Jobim-interpretation soaring through the just-reopened World Financial Center in November, 2002. Plus, a work by the late John Tavener, featuring Paul McCartney and the Tallis Scholars recorded in 2000 at the Church of St. Ignatius Loyola.
Listen also to the sweet soundc of a trombone shout choir, The McCollough Sons of Thunder, led by Elder Edward Babb. The Sons of Thunder are the brass band institution at the United House of Prayer for All People in Harlem. This performance comes from the World Festival of Sacred Music, co-curated by Philip Glass, and recorded in 2001 at Merkin Hall.
Hear more big band music from the Macedonia Romani brass band Kočani Orkestar, recorded at the World Financial Center in 1999, along with Ethio-groove featuring the legendary Mulatu Astatke, together with the Either Orchestra in 2004.
Finally, rounding out the trip down memory lane is music from the latest season of New Sounds Live, and the work by London-based Pete M. Wyer, his “Song of the Human” which featured The Crossing choir, and an enveloping sound installation, recorded at Brookfield Place in 2016.
