#4023: Electric Guitar Soundscapes
Hear a program of cinematic guitar-based soundscapes for this New Sounds show. Listen to works mostly created with electric guitar from Noveller, Ancient Ocean, Austin-based duo Balmorhea, and an atmospheric B-side from the 1990's by the British band, Kitchens of Distinction. There’s also music from the League of Crafty Guitarists, along with a work featuring pedal steel guitar by Chas Smith. Plus, for the web edition of the show, ambient music from the guitarist Kevin Hufnagel, & more.
Listen to wide open musical landscapes by Brooklyn/Austin-based composer and filmmaker Sarah Lipstate – her work, “The Unveiling.” Also, from the Austin-based duo of multi-instrumentalists, Balmorhea, hear an atmospheric and expansive piece, “Dreamt.” Sample guitar-based music that leans toward sound art andminimalism, by Ancient Ocean, aka NYC-via-Kentucky resident J.R. Bohannon as well.
There’s also music from the Robert Fripp-founded acoustic steel string performance-ensemble - the League of Crafty Guitarists,which has influenced countless guitarists, perhaps even the guitarist of British trio Kitchens of Distinction. We’ll hear a B-side from Kitchens, as they’re affectionately known. (There was an ‘accidental comeback’ record, Folly, released in 2013. Here’s an interview from The Quietus.)
Plus, listen to L.A. composer and instrument builder, Chas Smith’s pedal-steel based musical “waves”—from ripples to tsunamis. From a “bonus” track to the reissue of Nakadai, listen to 2008’s evocative “Ghosts on the Windows.” Rounding out the show is a Fripp-leaning soundscape from guitarist/composer Kevin Hufnagel, his “Static Aquarium,” from the record, "Transparencies." Hufnagel is probably better known for playing In the decidedly heavier bands Gorguts, Dysrhythmia, Sabbath Assembly, and Vaura.
