#4033: Unusual Covers
Hear Gorecki’s Symphony No. 3 – Symphony of Sorrowful Songs as “covered” by Colin Stetson his “Sorrow,” along with unexpected covers of The Velvet Underground, Bon Iver, Metallica, Sigur Ros, and Beyoncé.
Anchoring this program of unlikely covers is music from the virtuoso saxophonist Colin Stetson – his reworking of Henryk Gorecki’s “greatest hit” – his Symphony No.3, “Symphony of Sorrowful Songs.” Stetson’s arrangement of Gorecki’s three-movement symphony keeps the soprano voice (his sister, Megan Stetson) and the poignant strings (Sarah Neufeld of Arcade Fire, Rebecca Foon of Esmerine), but alters the instrumentation, using woodwinds, synthesizers, and electric guitars together with drummer Greg Fox (Liturgy, Ex-Eye, Skeletons.) Stetson’s re-orchestration reworking sails into post-rock territory with a black metal edge, with visits to electronic music as well.
Also, the Finnish cello band Apocalyptica plays Metallica, and American cello band Rasputina covers The Velvet Underground. Plus, Paris-based Lebanese trumpeter Ibrahim Maalouf and his quarter-tone trumpet plays Beyoncé, and an ensemble that plays North Brazilian folk music - Maracatu takes on Led Zeppelin, and more.
