#4037, With Bjarte Eike and Barokksolistene (The Alehouse Boys)

New Sounds | Nov 2, 2018

Founded and led by violinist Bjarte Eike, the Norwegian group Barokksolisten, takes a dim view of putting music into genre boxes. But, for their latest project, The Alehouse Sessions, their master plan is to restore the playful connections between the sounds of Baroque music, drinking songs from the British Isles, improvisation, and folk fiddling from various places in Northern Europe.

For this New Sounds, Bjarte Eike and the Alehouse Boys, um, baroque soloists, play some of these “old pop songs” in our studio. (Special emphasis on “Play.”) They do up an arrangement of an opera tune by music’s Shakespeare, Henry Purcell, along with traditional tunes from Norway, Scotland, Ireland, Denmark, the Shetland Islands, and even a bit of American traditional folk music. Listen also to some of their collaborative records with Jon Balke and the SIWAN project, which took musicians from Arabic and Persian cultures and had them playing with improvisers and the Barokksolsisten. Plus, hear a song of reflection, meditation and relief from the previous Bjarte Eike & Barokksolisten record, Image of Melancholy, which lives up to the motto – a quote by Victor Hugo: ‘Melancholy is the pleasure of being sad.’
