Hear an arrangement of Mike Oldfield’s Tubular Bells for a colliery brass band, 29 players strong, who call themselves, wait for it…Tubular Brass. Also listen to music by Northern Irish artist & electronic composer Hannah Peel, from her seven-movement suite for analogue synth & the same brass band – Tubular Brass, "Mary Casio: Journey to Cassiopeia."
There’s also music by other big bands, including John Hollenbeck Large Ensemble,from Germany, the Monika Roscher Big Band, and from Iceland, music by Jóhann Jóhannsson.
From the record, All Can Work (New Amsterdam Records) by John Hollenbeck Large Ensemble, hear a cover of a Kraftwerk song, “The Model,” arranged for 20-piece big band. Then, hear music from the late Icelandic composer Jóhann Jóhannsson, from his score for filmmaker Bill Morrison’s The Miners’ Hymns. His brass-heavy music is an elegiac nod to the coal mining culture in Northeast England, where colliery bands once thrived as well. Then, hear music from the Monika Roscher Big Band, a “Munich based art-rock-pop-electro collective in the shape of a big band”- 18 musicians strong.
