#4055: Recent Electronic Music
Listen to an hour of electronic music, which starts in a rhythmic place but also treads into darker electronic territory. There's music by Ben Frost, Coupler, Poppy Ackroyd, Ancient Ocean, Balmorhea, & Úlfur.
Hear pattern music by Chicago-based Coupler, an expandable trio, which actually began as a solo project by Ryan Norris. Coupler combines ambient music as Eno described – as ignorable as it is interesting – but their music also has a rhythmic drive and clearly owes a debt to Krautrock. Then, listen to music by British composer and producer Poppy Ackroyd, who is a pianist/violinist by training. As a producer she chops, assembles, and processes her layered music as in her record, Feathers and the forthcoming 2018 release, Resolve. Listen to her work, "Roads."
There’s also music by Colleen, who used to make records with layers of the Baroque instrument, viola da gamba. Now, on her latest record, A Flame My Love, A Frequency, she has switched to an all-electronic palette of sounds, topped by her voice. Listen to dense and ambient music by Brooklyn-based artist Ancient Ocean, along with expansive layered soundscape music by Austin-based instrumental ensemble, Balmorhea, who just joined us for a recent Soundcheck Podcast.
Venture into dark electronic malevolence from Icelandic composer Ben Frost from his latest, The Centre Cannot Hold. [Frost does not find his own music evil or dark, but incidentally, Brian Eno, who was Ben Frost’s mentor for a year or so, finds his music “terrifying.”] Plus, from Luxembourg-born, Iceland-raised, NYC-residing composer, singer, electronic musician Úlfur Hansson, aka Úlfur, hear a bit of eerie, folky pagan ritual music from his recent record, Arborescence, which was produced by Randall Dunn (SUNN O))), Earth, Marissa Nadler, etc.).
