#4067: Re-told Tales

New Sounds | Jan 12, 2018

For this New Sounds, listen to musical settings of older texts, refashioned somehow, like a modern retelling of an ancient Irish epic, words spoken by Ophelia from Hamlet, and poetry by Emily Brontë.

From composer/fiddler/electronic-musician, and founder of the Princeton Laptop Orchestra, Dan Trueman, sean-nós singer Iarla OLionáird, and poet Paul Muldoon, hear portions of the collaborative work, Olagón, a cantata in Doublespeak, which was written for Eighth Blackbird and Iarla Ó Lionáird. It is drawn from the legendary tale of Táin Bó Cúailnge, or “The Cattle Raid of Cooley" about Cú Chulainn, a hero of Irish mythology, with verse in both English and Irish Gaelic.

Listen also to reworked text from Shakespeare’s Hamlet, with only words spoken by Ophelia from reworked and intoned by Paul Griffiths and set to music by cellist Frances-Marie Uitti. Hear a sample of "15 Wild Decembers" by Geoff Smith, which uses “Remembrance” by 19th-century poet Emily Brontë. Plus, hear selections from "Terror & Magnificence," music by John Harle, a saxophonist with Michael Nyman's band. The work invokes Tudor texts and folk poetry from the British Isles.
