#4072: New Music for Reeds
Listen to music for just sax, sax and digital delay, music for multiple bassoons, a work for contrabass clarinet, and more on this program full of new music for reed instruments.
Hear a work for alto sax and magnetic tape from NYC-based sound artist and composer Lea Bertucci, which consists of gestures and bursts of notes on alto sax that are augmented with processing and delay. Having been recorded in the dynamic space of a former military base in Le Havre, France, the overall effect in the piece "Patterns for Alto Sax" is one of tension - gathering storms and musical swarms of alto sax.
Then there’s music for just sax – although it’s not just sax in Colin Stetson’s hands- featuring extended techniques involving circular breathing, contact microphones, and no loops or delays whatsoever. The results might sound like voice, organ, percussion – with just one musician, live in a room with a saxophone. (We’ve seen him play live! It’s unbelievable.)

Hear the saxophonist Ryan Muncy in a good portion of the long-form work, “Saxony” – a work which seems to travel the whole saxophone family and their overtones. Then move to a double-reed instrument in an otherworldly piece for multiple bassoons, seven bassoon players, to be exact. Hear Michael Gordon’s quasi-meditative, almost ecstatic work “Rushes.” Plus, hear “post electronic acoustic music” in a work for contrabass clarinet from former hardcore vocalist, art-punk musician, and Carbondale, lllinois native John McCowen.
