#4086: With Pianist Tom Rogerson
For this New Sounds, the English-born composer, improvising keyboardist, and founder of experimental electronic-postrock band 3TrappedTigers, Tom Rogerson, joins us in the studio to perform original creations on our piano and his electronics. Rogerson studied with Harrison Birtwistle but also worked as lounge pianist in a dilapidated hotel. Most recently, after a "meeting outside the toilet," he collaborated with producer and vintage gear manipulator Brian Eno on his latest record, called Finding Shore, which share orbits with Eno’s ambient work, that of Eno and Harold Budd, and Terry Riley.
On the album, every sound came from Rogerson, although Eno was altering and reshaping these sounds via the Moog Piano Bar – a piano-length device that sits atop the keys. He then fed these sounds back to Tom and created a circle of improvisation, utilizing the feedback loop as creative concept. But, in-studio, armed with a laptop and another keyboard/sequencer atop the piano to replicate the vintage and newly-created sounds from the record, Rogerson improvises against the machines, playing two different registers, almost like an organ. One hand makes the acoustic piano sounds and another is on the electronic keyboard firing the sequencer. Hear some of the works from Finding Shore, (without Eno) and an entirely new dynamic, flowing, and vaguely ecstatic piece from Rogerson’s “Rapture” series of works.
