#4090: Music for Piano and Strings
Hear many combinations of piano and strings in works by Canadian-born Sarah Davachi, from British composer Poppy Ackroyd, Norwegian guitarist Stephan Meidell and others.
From Montreal-based electroacoustic composer Sarah Davachi, explore a study in possible timbres of the piano, in her work, “For Piano.” Then, hear techno-baroque chamber music by the Norwegian guitarist Stephan Meidell, featuring Magda Mayas playing prepared piano. There’s also electronically-treated music by the UK duo of musician-producers Nightports, in collaboration with pianist Matthew Bourne.
Then, listen to music by classically trained pianist, violinist, producer, and composer, Poppy Ackroyd, who on her latest release, Resolve, chops, assembles, and processes her layers of piano and strings. Also, hear music from the piano insides from the Stephen Scott Bowed Piano Ensemble, created by rubbing fishing line against the piano strings. These sound patterns are inspired by the ancient and heroic sagas of the first long-distance ocean navigators – the Polynesians- from the record, Vikings of the Sunrise (Fantasy On The Polynesian Star Path Navigators). Plus, hear brand new music from pianist/composer Rachel Grimes, from her score to the documentary film, "The Doctor From India."
