#4096: Cross-Cultural Dreams
Hear an hour of cross-cultural music, all inspired by dreams. Far from sleepy, these works all have a common vision of possible musics – that of bringing cultural traditions together. Listen to Persian sounds in music from noise/drone duo SQÜRL, who are filmmaker and multi-instrumentalist Jim Jarmusch, and drummer Carter Logan. There’s chamber jazz from Montreal group Cordame that invokes the sounds of the Reunion Islands. Then, hear music made of metal, and played with cello bows, all layered together with Tibetan style undertone chanting by a group from Germany, Ensemble Sonus Mundi.
Also, listen to music which may contain influences of Philippine Kulintang, by drummer/composer Susie Ibarra & her Dreamtime Ensemble, from their recent record, Perception. Then hear the work “Folk Dreams” from the Swedish-South Indian group Nordic Raga, who are Bangalore-born violinist Jyotsna Srikanth, Swedish folk fiddler Mats Edén, along with percussion from Dan Svensson, percussion, and bass lines provided by saxophonist Pär Moberg. Plus, there’s music by Holger Czukay of CAN, music from Japanese composer Yas Kaz, and a bit of music from the record from the 1980's that neatly ties the show together, Fourth World, Vol. 1: Possible Musics from trumpeter Jon Hassell and producer Brian Eno.
