#4102: With Japanese Vocal Performer and Producer Hatis Noit

New Sounds | May 6, 2019

Listen to music by and an interview with Japanese singer/composer/producer Hatis Noit, who is now London-based, recorded on location at the offices of Erased Tapes in London. Originally from the northernmost island of Hokkaido, Hatis Noit’s new record, Illogical Dance, might roam freely amongst Bulgarian folk singing, Gregorian chant, gagaku (Japanese court music), and experimental pop.

Hatis Noit’s name means the stem of the lotus flower and is intended to serve as connection between the living world (represented by the lotus flower) and the spirit world (the lotus root.) Her music is also meant as a way to explore the connection between the visceral power of the human voice, the memory of all living beings, and nature.

Her process begins with improvisation. She layers many tracks of her voice, but then edits them together in an ‘illogical’ way to create what she calls “vibey” music. Listen to works by Hatis Noit, rooted in voice and electronics, which might describe the intense white calm of a Hokkaido winter, or a phrase from philosopher Walter Benjamin. Plus, hear her vocals from “Illogical Lullaby” completely remixed by Matmos to create a totally new work. - Caryn Havlik
