#4108: New Releases, April 2018

New Sounds | May 1, 2018

It’s the most wonderful time of the month – a day late, due to John having been in Cincinnati for the Music NOW! Festival. Hear new releases from April for this New Sounds. From the compilation record, We Out Here, whose music director was Shabaka Hutchings, listen to new jazz from London. Hear music from the collective Kokoroko (means ‘be strong’ in Urhobo), led by trumpeter Sheila Maurice-Grey. Their contribution to the record, “Abusey Junction,” was written by guitarist Oscar Jerome on the roof of a compound in Gambia where the band spent time last year. There’s also music by Maisha, an ensemble led by drummer Jake Long, inspired by spiritual jazz like Alice Coltrane and Pharoah Sanders.

Listen to new work by cellist Clarice Jensen which “expands and confuses the familiar sound of solo cello through the use of effects pedals, multi-tracking, and tape loops recorded at variable speeds” for a result that could be an organ slow-dancing with electric violin. There’s also music from a new record by Belgium-based composer Christina Vantzou, built on acoustic instruments - piano, harp, marimba, or bells - and augmented with electronics which approaches contemplative drift, and speaks to open spaces. Plus, hear new spacious music by Estonian-born German-based pianist and composer Kristjan Randalu, guitarist Ben Monder, and percussionist Markku Ounaskari. Sample new music by Missy Mazzoli who has re-imagined her work, "Vespers for a Dark Age" as "Vespers for Violin" from violinist Olivia de Prato's new record, Streya.

There’s also more music from London via a collection of works released on Piano Day - London in Key. Listen to music by Anna Rose Carter (one half of Moon Ate the Dark) for piano and electronics, along with music for piano – insides and out, by Aidan Shepherd, who plays keys for the Afro-beaty, jazz/ electronica band Ruby Rushton. Plus, hear a work for piano and electronics from New York-based Andrew Shapiro.
