#4109: New Sounds Live: ModernMedieval and Julianna Barwick

From the New Sounds Live/Ecstatic Music Festival collaboration, hear a premiere of new works for the all-star vocal trio called ModernMedieval, and music by Julianna Barwick, separately and together, recorded at Merkin Concert Hall on April 19, 2018.

ModernMedieval are a three-member super-group of Anonymous 4 founder Jacqueline Horner-Kwiatek, Martha Cluver, and Eliza Bagg, both from the vocal octet Roomful of Teeth. Hear them perform work by the abbess and mystic Hildegard von Bingen, along with a new work by  Pulitzer Prize-winning composer, vocalist, violinist, and producer Caroline Shaw (also of Roomful of Teeth.)

Then, composer, vocalist, and producer Julianna Barwick uses digital loops to create entire choirs out of her own voice and augments that sound with electronics and samples. Hear this totally modern but also kind of medieval soundscape. Hear Julianna Barwick's new collaboration with the all-star vocal trio called ModernMedieval, in a work called "Adder" - not like a snake, but in the sense of adding numbers.
