#4112: Folk-Inspired Guitars

New Sounds | May 9, 2018

Listen to an hour of music that moves in the sound world of folk guitars – from the British Isles and that so-called “folk baroque” to “American Primitive” and that of Appalachian-style music, and of course, beyond.

To set the stage of the American Primitive fingerstyle guitar players, listen to a bit of music by John Fahey along with guitar work by Welsh multi-instrumentalist (now based in Brighton, England), Gwenifer Raymond which is drawn from the roots music of Mississippi and Appalachia.

There’s also music by North Carolina-based 12-string guitarist Sarah Louise, who is one-half of the duo House and Land. Her music evokes forests and creeks and falls somewhere between the fingerpicked styles of “American Primitive” guitar (think John Fahey, Jack Rose, or Glenn Jones), and “folk baroque” (attributed to both Davy Graham and Martin Carthy and said to come from how one plays the oud.) There’s a new record, Deeper Woods, due out any day now from Sarah Louise that might evoke the Blue Ridge Mountains.

Then, listen to plucked and bowed guitar music by Seabuckthorn, aka Andy Cartwright, whose music is heavily influenced by mountain terrain as well – the Southern Alps- and who brings in atmospherics and textures of banjo, clarinet, synth, and percussion. Also, hear the updated minimalistic take on an old Appalachian song by Anna & Elizabeth -Anna Roberts-Gevalt (from Vermont), and Elizabeth LaPrelle (from Virginia)- from their recent The Invisible Comes to Us. And more.
