#4114: Extended Folk Music From the UK

New Sounds | May 14, 2018

Listen to music by folk singer Eliza Carthy, folk band Lau, and folk singer and song collector, Sam Lee - all on the ambitious side of UK folk, since all the pieces are for extended ensembles. Hear these and other musicians from British Isles take new approaches to the old songs, along with brand new folk-steeped compositions.

Folk singer Eliza Carthy comes from the English folk tradition (she is the daughter of English folk musicians singer/guitarist Martin Carthy and singer Norma Waterson) and is known for her folk fiddling. Hear a piece that Eliza Carthy did for the PRS Foundation's New Music Biennial - "Rivers and Railways"- along with a tune from The Imagined Village project.

There's also music by the folk band Lau, (a word that means "natural light” in Orcadian), who are from both Scotland and England. Hear looped fiddle, accordion, guitar and dark electronic treatments from the folk band Lau in collaboration with string experimenters the Elysian Quartet - the title track from their record, "The Bell That Never Rang." (The work was also written for the PRS Foundation's New Music Biennial.) Also, listen to music from Sam Lee and musicians from The Nest Collective in arrangements of folk songs which feature cello, trumpet, violin, koto, dulcimer, and percussion.
