#4118: Piano, Plus...

New Sounds | May 23, 2018

Listen to music centered on the piano, although there’ll be other instruments coming and going. There’s music performed by Dutch pianist Saskia Lankhoorn from three different composers; two based in Holland & one from Ireland. Plus, there’s music from Swiss pianist and composer Nik Bartsch, along with music by Vijay Iyer from his album Far From Over, although the work we’ll hear is for a trio.

Hear music from Dutch-based Australian composer Kate Moore for amplified piano and recordings of the same pianist - Saskia Lankhoorn. Also, listen to Nik Bartsch’s Mobile, an acoustic chamber group who blends jazz, ritual groove, and “rhythmic strategies of contemporary classical music” (don’t say minimalism).

Then, listen to a work written for pianist Saskia Lankhoorn by Seattle-born Dutch based Peter Adriaansz. In the three movement work called ”Attachments,” droning sine tones and a specially-prepared piano combine for flickering atmospherics. Later, in a work by Irish composer and producer Benedict Schlepper-Connolly, Lankhoorn is the piano anchor of an electro-chamber ensemble in Schlepper-Connolly’s work, “Field.”

Also, hear “folk music for the ocean floor” from Water Stories by Norwegian pianist, composer, and novelist Ketil Bjørnstad, recorded in 1993. The “plus” here is guitarist Terje Rypdal, drummers Jon Christensen and Per Hillestad, and bassist Bjørn Kjellemyr.
