#4121: New Releases, May 2018

New Sounds | May 31, 2018

It’s the most wonderful time of the month. Hear some of the fabulous selections that have made it through the post and interwebs to reach our earholes. There’s music by accordionist Guy Klusevcsek in tribute to Pauline Oliveros, playful music from the Finnish band Tunto, and atmospheric music from multi-instrumentalist Leila Abdul-Rauf of Vastum.

Listen to music by Portland, OR-based instrumental guitarist Marisa Anderson, whose work incorporates electronic music, drone, and some elements of minimalism while sometime touching upon blues, jazz, and country music, with a little bit of so-called “American Primitive” style as well. “Pulse” is from her Thrill Jockey debut, Cloud Corner.

Hear new music by Sydney, Australia-based experimental electro-everything quintet, Tangents, along with music by the Finnish band Tunto where ambient, jazz & electronics play in the sandbox together.

There's also new music in tribute to Pauline Oliveros from accordionist Guy Klusevcsek featuring the Bellows Brigade of accordionists Will Holshouser, Nathan Koci, and Kamala Sankaram, There’s also haunting atmospheric music- again for the late Pauline Oliveros - by Bay Area multi-instrumentalist Leila Abdul-Rauf also known for her work in death metal band Vastum, electro-acoustic band Ionophore, and proggy power metal band Hammers Of Misfortune (and much more.) This piece from Abdul-Rauf’s record Diminution, is called "Self Recognition" and was inspired by the last few lines of that first page of the late composer's book Deep Listening: A Composer's Sound Practice, ‘Consciousness is acting with awareness, precision, and memory…In this way, one has self-recognition.’(Bandcamp)

Then, listen to global chamber music of a sort from American saxophonist and composer, George Brooks, North Indian violinist and vocalist, Kala Ramnath, and Dutch harp virtuoso, Gwyneth Wentink and their trio called Elements. Plus, sample a tiny portion of Brian Eno's massive box set, Music for Installations, a collection of new, rare and previously unreleased music from Brian Eno's installations "past, present and future" ranging from 1986 until the present.
