#4130: West African Blues
Listen to music from late great Malian blues guitarist Ali Farka Touré and the American blues guitarist Ry Cooder, from the record Talking Timbuktu. Also, hear the Malian guitar virtuoso Vieux Farka Touré (and Ali Farka Touré’s son), in collaboration with the Israeli pianist and singer Idan Raichel and his ensemble.
Then, listen to Diali Cissokho and Kaira Ba, a North Carolina kora-led dance band combining West African traditional music and rockenroll. The tune we’ll hear, “Ndoli,” almost has the loping groove to it, while another tune from Malian guitarist, (and protégé of the legendary Ali Farka Touré), Samba Touré, rocks out with the classic so-called “Bo Diddley” beat.
Plus, listen to Malian singer Khaira Arby, the “Nightingale of North Mali,” in a rough garage band setting, from Timbuktu, as well as in collaboration with the New York funky klezmer brass band The Sway Machinery. All that and more.
