#4132: Guitarists Susan Alcorn and Marisa Anderson

New Sounds | Jul 13, 2018

Listen to music by pedal steel guitarist and innovator Susan Alcorn, recorded at the 2018 Big Ears Festival and music by electric guitarist Marisa Anderson, recorded in our studio. Both guitarists are fans of contemporary classical music, jazz improvisation, world music, electronic music, and both have Big Ears (ahem).

Listen to Susan Alcorn’s arrangements of works by Astor Piazzolla, an original that was inspired by a bout of food poisoning, and her interpretation of one of the movements of Messaien’s Quartet for the End of Time, recorded at the Knoxville venue, The Standard, as part of Big Ears 2018.

Also, hear music by guitarist Marisa Anderson, recorded for the Soundcheck Podcast. Classically trained in guitar, she finds inspiration in West African and Ethiopian guitar players, the minimalism of LaMonte Young, and drone from the natural world. Her style finds her playing against the ringing of the strings, and her internal guitar language finds her playing in the open D tuning. She’s a player who turns up the amps to eleven, and plays lightly, letting the amplification do the ringing.
