#4133: Music for Trumpet, Mostly

New Sounds | Jul 16, 2019

There’s music for trumpet, mostly, featuring music from Jon Hassell, both old and new. Plus, hear music by Arve Henriksen from Norway, Christian Scott from New Orleans, and Laura Jurd’s band, Dinosaur.

Trumpeter Jon Hassell takes the martial sound of the trumpet and whispers with it. He’s studied Indian raga music, and often uses a harmonizer – which made it sound like three trumpets were playing together – along with other electronic techniques. Additionally, Jon Hassell pioneered a musical ethos he dubbed 'Fourth World', a mixture of said traditional Indian vocal style adapted for the trumpet - and electronics. In this vein, hear music by Hassell, in collaboration with Brian Eno.

Then, listen to music by the band Dinosaur, a ‘synth-pop meets jazz band’ from their 2018 record, Wonder Trail. It’s way-out music with a lot of riffs, groove, and bite. Then, American multi-instrumentalist Abdul-Rauf (perhaps better known for her work in the metal band Vastum, among others) takes sounds like choral vocals, distant trumpet, and delicate guitar and warps them beyond recognition. Listen to a track from her record, Diminution.

Hear music by Norwegian trumpeter Arve Henriksen, along with Toronto-based band Peppermoth, which features Gary Diggins playing trumpet. Also, from the most recent release by Jon Hassell, Listening to Pictures, there’s a track called “Slipstream,” which uses harmonizer, along with electronic sampling, loops, overdubs and distorted layers of voicings to achieve its “Fourth World aesthetic.” Plus atmospheric and drama-filled music from L.A.-based sax player Sam Gendel. -Caryn Havlik
