#4134 Cross-Cultural Musical Meetings
Listen to musical meetings across cultures and continents for this New Sounds. From Taiwanese pipa master Chung Yufeng and a fascinating record full of collaborations, listen to her piece, “Siwa” composed in Egypt, inspired by an Arabic music scale, but with the Indonesian gamelan, Sambasunda. Also, listen to her pipa (the traditional Chinese lute) in the song, “Magnetic” which features German pianist Matthias Frey playing both inside and outside the piano. Also, hear the Sambasunda Quintet in a work called “Teman Endah” (Beautiful Garden), centered on the kacapi, a traditional boat-shaped zither.
Sample music by acoustic fingerstyle/lap tapping guitarist from northern Virginia, Yasmin Williams, who also plays kalimba. Listen to a collaboration between Chinese-born pipa player Wu Man and the San Diego-based son jarocho group Son de San Diego. Then, hear music from Junun (which means “the madness of love”), the tri-part collaboration between Israel/India-based composer/musician Shye Ben Tzur, Indian qawwali musicians The Rajasthan Express, who also bring the brass band party, and Radiohead guitarist/keyboardist Jonny Greenwood adds guitars and electronics.
There’s music from the Silk Road Ensemble, a cross-cultural collective founded around the turn of the century by cellist Yo-Yo Ma. From their record, A Playlist Without Borders, listen to music by John Zorn from his massive Book of Angels project. Then listen to a music by the Turkish singer/songwriter Gaye Su Akyol in a cinematic, sensuous tune where Anatolian melody meets Western electric guitars. Plus, hear recent music by Monoswezi (musicians from Mozambique, Norway, Sweden & Zimbabwe), where Zimbabwean mbira and vocals come together with Mozambican percussion and cool Scandinavian jazz.
