#4137: Music From the South Pacific

New Sounds | Aug 1, 2018

Listen to music from or about the region of the South Pacific from Australia and New Zealand to as far away as Easter Island, featuring music by Gurrumul, Stewart Copeland, and Telek.

There’s music by the late Indigenous Australian musician Gurrumul Yunupingu. For his last record, the singer, songwriter and multiinstrumentalist recorded with members of the Australian Chamber Orchestra and Sydney Symphony Orchestra, passing down stories of his culture and traditional Yolngu life. Also, listen to Philip Glass’s Australian-themed work “Voices” for organ, two digeridoos, and a narrator.

Hear music inspired by Polynesian mariners – “Vikings of the Sunrise” by Stephen Scott, along with music by New Zealand’s Annea Lockwood, a Samoan lullabye. Plus, music from Papua New Guinea featuring pan pipes and vocals by Not Drowning, Waving, along with music by singer and songwriter George Telek Mamua, aka Telek, who recorded for Peter Gabriel's Real World Label. And more.
