#4149: Ambient Minimalism

New Sounds | Jan 17, 2021

Listen to music that seems to set and sustain a mood, mostly built around piano and electronics. There are works by Poppy Ackroyd from England, Olafur Arnalds from Iceland, Canadian composer Sarah Davachi, who is now based in L.A., Christina Vantzou from Belgium, the German-based duo Grandbrothers, music from Max Richter, and a little music from Brian Eno.

Hear ambient classical minimalism by Missouri-born, Brussels-based math teacher and composer Christina Vantzou. It’s from her fourth record, No. 4, which was influenced by “the loosening of time” to achieve its “quietly hallucinatory properties.” Then there’s also music created using natural piano sounds together with electronically altered sounds from the latest by pianist/violinist/producer Poppy Ackroyd. Then, listen to work for Echoplex-manipulated piano by Sarah Davachi, from her latest record, Gave in Rest.

From Dusseldorf duo Grandbrothers, hear music built from either live piano, or live processing of the piano but with the influence of electronic dance music. Listen to music by Icelandic composer Olafur Arnalds, from his latest, re:member. Plus, there’s a track after J.S. Bach by Max Richter, from a compilation record released by 130701, FatCat's Modern Classical/Post-Classical imprint. And, there's Brian Eno’s "Music for Airports." -Caryn Havlik
