#4165: Songs of Protest and Resistance, Part 2

New Sounds | Mar 1, 2021

Listen to contemporary songs of protest and resistance from Nicole Mitchell, Ambrose Akinmusire, Emily Wells, Wadada Leo Smith, and Marc Ribot with Sam Amidon and Fay Victor.

Hear music from an eight-part suite by flutist and composer Nicole Mitchell, a Chicago native, who is also a professor of music at the University of California-Irvine. Listen to "a sound" from her record, maroon cloud - a joyous tribute to imagination and “its ability to foster resistance in our dystopian times.” [In a note from her Bandcamp, it is further explained that “Maroon,” ties into the theme of resistance by referencing the Maroons — those Africans who escaped slavery in the Caribbean and banded with indigenous people to form their own communities as early as the 16th century, in addition to the meaning of being stranded.] Joining Mitchell in this drum-less quartet are cellist Tomeka Reid, pianist Aruán Ortiz and vocalist Fay Victor.

Then, there’s music from composer and producer Emily Wells. She’s a classically-trained violinist, who also plays drums, keys, beat machines and whatever else she can fit in her road case and her works have a tendency to draw on church music and the ultimate musical architect: J.S. Bach. Hear one of her series of “symphonies” for one-woman orchestra: her voice and her live-looped violin, drums, percussions, and effects. Listen also to guitarist Marc Ribot, featuring vocalists Fay Victor and Sam Amidon in an original song of resistance, ‘How To Walk In Freedom”. Then hear guitarist Zacc Harris, in an arrangement of the Woody Guthrie protest song, “This Is Land Is Your Land,” which includes bass and drums.

Listen to music by trumpeter and composer Ambrose Akinmusire, rapper Kool A.D. (Das Racist), the new music strings of Mivos Quartet and pianist Sam Harris, drummer Marcus Gilmore, and saxophonist Walter Smith III. Commissioned by the Liquid Music Series and the Ecstatic Music Festival, the record, Origami Harvest, is a collection of suites that calls out societal racism, and the injustice that divides us. Hear one of these suites, called "Americana/the garden waits for you to match her wildness." Plus, music by composer and trumpet virtuoso Wadada Leo Smith from "Ten Freedom Summers," his epic, four-hour jazz piece inspired by moments in the civil rights struggle.
