#4170: Music Inspired by Franz Schubert

New Sounds | Mar 14, 2021

For this New Sounds, hear music based on, or inspired by Franz Schubert’s songs and song cycles. Hear a cover of Kraftwerk’s song, “Franz Schubert“ from English composer Arthur Jeffes, who leads the band Penguin Café. Then, layers of clubby electronics and keyboards support delicate harp, violin and cello melodies in an arrangement of Schubert’s Schwanengesang (“Swan Song”) by Kate Simko & London Electronic Orchestra.

Listen to a preview of Douglas Cuomo’s “Savage Winter,” a reimagining of Wilhelm Müller’s poetry cycle Winterreise in a multimedia one-act music theater piece. These same poems by Wilhem Müller were most famously set by Franz Schubert over 200 years ago and tell a cold, dark story of a lovelorn man wandering through a winter landscape, inspiring bleak and beautiful music. Listen to selections of “Savage Winter” in the English translation for voice, piano, guitar, amplified trumpet, and electronics. Plus, some of Franz Schubert’s original songs from various cycles as well. - Caryn Havlik
