#4177: Jazz Without Borders

New Sounds | Nov 6, 2019

For this New Sounds, listen to music by musicians rooted in “jazz” but not bound by it. There’s music by drummer Andrew Cyrille (Brooklyn), trumpeter Wadada Leo Smith (Leland, MS), and guitarist Bill Frisell (Baltimore) from a collaborative record, Lebroba, which takes its name from a made-up word built of the first few letters of each musician’s hometown.

Also, hear music from trumpeter and bandleader Laura Jurd and Dinosaur. She looks to Miles Davis for inspiration. He famously disliked the word ‘jazz’ and played music all over many maps – from the fusion he created to referencing classical music, and even covering Cyndi Lauper. (Lately, reedman Shabaka Hutchings is another musician who refuses to be confined by the word “jazz.”) Laura Jurd, however, in addition to perhaps having a sound-world in common with trumpeter Miles Davis’ “electric period” in the 1970’s, looks to him as a hero, admiring his attitude and his constant evolution.

Then, listen to Chicago-based drummer and producer Makaya McCraven’s arrangement of “Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds” from A Day in the Life: Impressions of Pepper, - a Record Store Day release by Impulse! Records, of musicians re-interpreting The Beatles’ Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, some 50 years later.

Listen to the latest by Cuban jazz pianist Aruan Ortiz and clarinetist Don Byron, a Bronx-born composer with Antiguan family roots, in an original piece by Byron, “Delphian Nuptials.” Plus, hear their arrangement of a work by Catalan composer Federico Mompou. Listen to a piece by Omar Sosa from the record, Eggun, named after the Yoruba deity; the religion was transferred to Cuba, and became part of the Santeria tradition. Then, there's gorgeous music featuring both Cuban pianist Omar Sosa, (who actually lives in Barcelona – in the Catalan region of Spain) and Malian kora player Ballake Sissoko from a 2011 record by the Persian classical percussionists of the family Trio Chemirani. - Caryn Havlik
