#4181: Between Art and Pop Song

New Sounds | Nov 15, 2019

Hear music from the musical netherworld between art song and pop song with works by Alev Lenz with Roomful of Teeth, Julia Holter, Berlin’s Barbara Morgenstern, and ANOHNI.

Sample music by Los Angeles-based  composer, Julia Holter, from her excellent new record, Aviary, titled to refer to the music’s internal conversations, which roughly evoke birdsong. (Tiny Mixtapes) Holter has been finding the beautiful in the terrible madness of the political climate since 2016. Listen to her chamber-pop augmented by electronics creation, “Voce Simul,” sung in both Latin and English.

Listen also to music by German singer and composer Alev Lenz who recently had a song, “Fall Into Me,” placed in the TV series, Black Mirror. A few months later, Roomful of Teeth were so taken with the song that they performed an arrangement as an encore work. The vocal octet and the composer connected and now have recorded new material together. Hear a world premiere of music from that record, 3, which has not yet been released.

Then hear voice paired with a choir of saxophones, in music by Berlin-based electro-pop icon, Barbara Morgenstern. In her piece, “Teil 1 oder Teil 2” she creates a 12-piece sax orchestra with electronics, feat. Sax player and composer Christian Biegai. Also, hear music from Norwegian trio Building Instrument who are singer Mari Kvien Brunvoll who plays electronics and zither, drummer Øyvind Hegg-Lunde and synth and electronics musician Åsmund Weltzien.

There’s also brand new music from My Brightest Diamond, aka vocalist and composer Shara Nova, from her record, A Million And One. Also, listen to music by Björk featuring ANOHNI, “Atom Dance,” from her her gorgeous and riveting record, Vulnicura. Then, there's one of ANOHNI’s older tunes (back when she was known as Antony), “Hope There's Someone.” Plus, hear music by Shara Nova for the Brooklyn Youth Chorus, featuring ICE (International Contemporary Ensemble), and more. - Caryn Havlik
