#4195: A Jazzy Suggestion

New Sounds | Dec 5, 2019

Hear music that joins multiple streams: a suggestion of jazz, hip hop delivery or production, the upbeat groove of Afrobeat, or a bit of funk, groove, and world music by drummer/producer Kassa Overall, trumpeter Steph Richards, clarinetist Anat Cohen, and the London-based group Ezra Collective.

Hear music from the New York-based jazz drummer and producer-MC Kassa Overall from his debut album, Go Get Ice Cream and Listen to Jazz, which augments its already sick drum beats with tasty hip hop production, and the crucial spoken word sample. Then, listen to music from trumpeter Steph Richards and her deconstructed trumpet, prepared piano, bass and drums. Hear a work, "Brooklyn Machine" named from Allen Ginsberg's poem "My Sad Self", which “takes sounds of city life and explores a spontaneous prose of ugly beauty” (stephrichards.com).

Listen to music from jazz multi-instrumentalist Daniel Carter, Tobias Wilner of Danish electronic dream pop group Blue Foundation, Wu-Tang Clan bassist Djibril Toure and drummer Federico Ughi. Their record, New York United, is a blend of electronic beats and floating sax lines. There’s also new music from the Grammy-winning band Snarky Puppy, the jazz-funk-world-groove band led by Michael League, from their forthcoming record, Immigrance.

Hear an in-studio performance from the group Ezra Collective, led by drummer Femi Koleoso, who marry hip hop, Afrobeat, and electronic music into their unmistakably London sound. There’s also song-oriented jazz from the Louisville, KY-based octet called Liberation Prophecy, led by saxophonist/composer Jacob Duncan, whose inspirations include Carla Bley,Tin Pan Alley songsmiths and even the Rolling Stones. Then, hear clarinet-led music in a Malian song, “Kenedougou Foly” arranged for the Anat Cohen Tentet, and more. - Caryn Havlik
