#4199: Guitar and Guitar-Based Music
For this New Sounds, listen to music with guitar as its sound source from Sardinian guitarist Paolo Angeli, North Carolina guitarist Sarah Louise, and Dutch artist Machinefabriek.
Listen to Radiohead played on extended guitar by Sardinian musician Paolo Angeli. He plays a guitar that has two extra sets of sympathetic strings, a set of foot-operated hammers, and a way to make the strings sound as though they’re being bowed. He manages to combine Sardinian music into these Radiohead adaptations. Then, listen to music created on guitar and generating a world of overtones by Asheville, NC-based composer and guitarist Sarah Louise.
Hear music by Dutch composer Rutger Zuydervelt under the moniker Machinefabriek. He uses cassette recorders, tone generators, radios, and synths to construct “bewildering aural architecture” in an eight-part suite. Listen to the conclusion, “Part VIII” featuring singer-songwriter, Marissa Nadler. Plus listen to music by SQÜRL, a band featuring Jim Jarmusch’s electric guitar as a drone-generating instrument, and more.
