#4202: The Egyptian Project

New Sounds | Feb 7, 2019

Listen to music inspired by contemporary Egypt for this New Sounds with works from Cypress Hill with Sadat & 50, the musical collective One Beat, and the Nile Project.

Listen to music from the The Nile Project – an activist group of musicians aiming to protect the Nile River who represent Ethiopia, Egypt, Sudan, Kenya, all of the 11 countries through which the Nile River flows. They came together in the Ugandan town of Jinja, combining harps, lyres, and voices in a blend African and Arabic scales, Ethio-jazz and taqsim (instrumental improvisation).

Then, the multi-platinum hip hop band Cypress Hill collaborates with a group of Egyptian street musicians from Cairo, known as Sadat & 50, in a tune called “Band of Gypsies” with an electric guitar riff that drifts around a Near Eastern mode. Ethio-jazzer Mulatu Astatke teams up with UK’s musician collective known as the Heliocentrics the London-based psychedelic jazz band who revolve just as much around Sun Ra as James Brown, Afro and Eastern sounds.

Plus, from The Egyptian Project, headed by producer French producer Jérôme Ettinger, hear a  mix of electronic, acoustic and Egyptian traditional music. There’s also electro- Chaabi, something like Egyptian music meets techno punk, from a mixtape by producers Joep Schmitz and Yannick Verhoeven, aka Cairo Liberation Front. Hear music from the project known as One Beat, featuring musicians from five continents, along with the group Alif, who are musicians are from Egypt and Lebanon, and more. -Caryn Havlik
