#4206: Works That Deal With Snow

New Sounds | Dec 23, 2019

Listen for a wide array of music involving snow by guitarist Sarah Louise, Inuk throat-singer, activist, and composer Tanya Tagaq, Icelandic bassist Skúli Sverrisson, cellist Zoë Keating, singer Theo Bleckmann in collaboration with John Hollenbeck’s Claudia Quintet, and Swiss percussionist Pierre Favre.

Sample new music by Inuk throat-singer, activist, composer, and Polaris Prize Winner Tanya Tagaq that she wrote for a soundtrack to the museum exhibit, Polar Worlds, at the National Maritime Museum in London. Listen also to music by North Carolina-based 12-string guitarist Sarah Louise, whose “American Primitive” guitar music evokes forests and creeks and nature. We’ll hear her tune “Silent In Snow.”

Hear music from Icelandic bass player and composer Skúli Sverrisson, called “The Sound of Snow.” There’s also music by Zoë Keating containing loops and layers of her cello from her recent EP, Snowmelt. Listen to more music for cello by Lori Goldston, a composer of film scores and one-time side-person to Nirvana.

Listen to music from composer Phil Kline’s end of the millennium mass, John the Revelator. His snow song is the text of a poem by David Shapiro about snow falling on streets of lower Manhattan, but how it also evokes the sight and sound of the ash falling on those same streets in the days after Sept. 11. Also, listen to music by drummer John Hollenbeck’s Claudia Quintet, featuring singer Theo Bleckmann, and more.
