#4238: The Roedelius Effect

Co-founded by Hans-Joachim Roedelius and the late Dieter Moebius, the German duo Cluster helped establish Krautrock and inspired (and still inspires) musicians of many other genres. For this New Sounds, hear music that might be under the influence of Roedelius, featuring works with a direct connection like Tim Story’s Roedelius Cells, or those with an indirect association, like music by bassist and composer Josephine Wiggs.

Listen to music by Ohio-based musician and Grammy-nominated composer Tim Story, where Story sliced, edited, warped, and layered hours of improvisations by Roedelius into a song cycle of piano and electronics, called The Roedelius Cells. Hear two of these shimmery layered soundscapes.

There's also music by Josephine Wiggs, bass player of the Breeders, and ambient music composer that is “reminiscent of Brian Eno and recalls the delicate, languid minimalism of Harold Budd.” (Wiggs’ Bandcamp) Then, from the collaborative duo AVA, who are Aisling Brouwer and Anna Phoebe, hear music with piano, strings and electronics from their forthcoming EP, Waves, “written for those looking to find solace in a world full of unrest.” Both composers are British citizens, born and raised in mainland Europe, and Waves was crafted against a backdrop of the Brexit vote.

Also, from the duo called Group Listening who are clarinetist Stephen Black and pianist Paul Jones, listen to a chamber reworking of "fractal phrases" by Roedelius - his "Wenn der Sudwind Weht". Plus, hear electro-acoustic music by Daniel Wohl from the forthcoming 2019 record, État, recorded with members of yMusic and the Calder Quartet.
