#4245: The Reich Influence
Hear music by Steve Reich and music that carries trace elements of Reich’s work by Montreal harpist Sarah Pagé, guitarists David Chalmin and Bryce Dessner, and percussionist David Skidmore.
Listen to music by Steve Reich, his “Electric Counterpoint”, with one movement on guitar, as it is scored, and the other two movements arranged for marimba and harp. Hear electric guitarist Trevor Babb performing the first movement, having carefully coordinated the timbres and colors of each layer using several different guitars. Then, hear an arrangement of movement two of "Electric Counterpoint" for marimba by Svet Stoyanov, a Professor of Percussion at Peabody. Lastly, marvel at the multi-layered strings of Canadian harpist Valérie Milot as she adapts and re-contextualizes Steve Reich's "Electric Counterpoint".
Then there’s music with repeating riffs in motion by Montreal-based experimental harpist Sarah Pagé, from her forthcoming debut, Dose Curves. Also, hear music from American guitarist, composer, and curator Bryce Dessner (of rock band, The National) and his work, “Haven” for two pianos and two guitars. The piece features both Bryce himself and fellow guitarist David Chalmin - and pianists Katia and Marielle Labèque - and has plenty of the rhythmic interplay and propulsive thrust that might bring to mind Steve Reich. Listen to music by David Skidmore of Third Coast Percussion from his larger suite called “Aliens With Extraordinary Abilities”. This piece has a subtitle that both gives sound advice as it intrigues: “Don't Eat Your Young”. Plus, a bit of music from Sicilian sax player Gianni Gebbia in collaboration with German composer and artist Heiner Goebbels. - Caryn Havlik
