#4254, Music Inspired by Post-Rock and Metal

New Sounds | Jun 10, 2020

Listen to music inspired by the cinematic sounds of post-rock or metal from Korean band Jambinai, Japanese band Mono, Norwegian pagan band Wardruna and Finnish band Oddarang.

Listen to music by the Korean quintet Jambinai who play traditional instruments like piri, saenghwang, and gayageum, along with rockenroll instruments. It’s from their 2019 release, Onda – which means “wave” in Spanish and means ‘come’ in Korean, and the band’s press helpfully adds that “the third big wave of Jambinai is coming”. Hear tense, dark, and atmostpheric music by British composer Bobby Krlic (also known by his stage name as The Haxan Cloak) for the film Midsommar.

Also, listen to the Nordic neo-pagan folk band, Wardruna, who use antler horns, tree trunk drums, and other rare Nordic folk instruments woven together with various field recordings of Norwegian nature sounds to evoke ritual music of Scandinavia in the pre-Christian era. Not surprisingly, Wardruna also scored the TV series Vikings (and for enlightening reading on their metal bona fides, see Encyclopaedia Metallum).

There’s music by Finnish quintet Oddarrang who blend post-rock dynamics and subtle electronics into a grand, nearly orchestral-sounding swirl of sound. Plus, Kronos Quartet & Mogwai play the Clint Mansell score to The Fountain, and more.
