#4267: Music for Keyboards
Hear all kinds of keyboard music: piano, prepared piano, synthesizer, harmonium, and vibraphone for this New Sounds, featuring works by Julian Loida, Kelly Moran, Canadian pianist Lubomyr Melnyk, and German pianist/producer Nils Frahm.
Listen to piano music by Benny Gebert who is one-half of the pop group HAERTS. For his record, Triptych, he used three pianos to make the record, and recorded it in an upstate New York farmhouse with opened doors and windows. Gebert combines the crickets and outside sounds along with backwards piano sounds and the captured and altered attack of the hammers on the keys. Also, hear music from Boston-based percussionist Julian Loida for vibraphone – technically a pitched percussion instrument made up of metallic keys and resonators that is set up like a piano. His electro-acoustic soundscape is a mix of all the qualities of the vibraphone: interlocking Reich-like layers, the buzzing of the thumb piano, or mbira, and the lingering vibrations of metal bars which act almost like singing bowls.
Then, listen to music from the American pianist and producer Kelly Moran, and her record, Ultraviolet, which mixes prepared piano, unaltered piano, and synths together in melodic cascades, all washing over the listener in hypnotic and fascinating waves. There’s also music by German pianist/producer Nils Frahm from his collection of encores, featuring both processed piano and what John Schaefer calls “wheezy” harmonium. Plus, hear music by the veteran modular synth fanatics synth players of Delia Darbyshire Appreciation Society - Garry Hughes & Harvey Jones - and music from composer and pianist Lubomyr Melnyk together with vocalist Hatis Noit.
