#4286: Voices and Electronics

New Sounds | Oct 9, 2019

Listen to voices from around the world with electronics for this New Sounds. Hear new music from computer music composer Carl Stone, the result of an epic journey through southeast Asian field recordings and street cassette culture. The work “Fujiken”, for solo computer and electronics combines found-sound with layers of manipulation, and might just explore the idea of suspended time.

Then listen to an early electroacoustic work from veteran American composer Ingram Marshall that draws on Swedish folk music. The work, “Rop Pa Fjellet” (Cries Upon The Mountains) is based on the field recordings of distinct and piercing traditional calls of shepherdesses, in the mountains. There’s also music from Tibetan singer Lama Gyurme in collaboration with French producer and keyboardist Jean-Philippe Rykiel.

Hear music from the Sámi singer Wimme Saari, who combines the half-sung, half-chanted traditional yoik with soundscapes created by sequencers and synths. Plus, hear a modern medieval creation by Ambrose Field, building on music by Guillaume Dufay, featuring tenor John Potter, and more.
