#4288: Guitar and Percussion Quartets

New Sounds | Oct 16, 2019

Hear new music for percussion quartet by Devonté Hynes in collaboration with Third Coast Percussion, along with new music featuring NY-based electric guitar quartet, Dither.

Listen to music for the New York-based electric guitar quartet, Dither, from their forthcoming album, Potential Differences, featuring music by Paula Matthusen, Jascha Narveson, Gyan Riley, and Eve Beglarian. Hear a work by Jascha Narveson, called “The Floaty One” – a study in harmonics that guitars can make. Also, listen to Paula Matthusen’s “but because without this” was originally scored for bluegrass quartet.

Also, hear new music by composer Devonté Hynes (aka R&B singer Blood Orange) arranged and orchestrated by the Chicago ensemble Third Coast Percussion, from a new collaborative record, FIELDS, which includes a dance theatre piece, and other works. Hynes grew up playing cello and cites Philip Glass as a big influence on him as a composer, although when the mallet percussion comes in on “Perfectly Voicesless,” it’s hard not to also think of music by American minimalist Steve Reich.

Then, listen to the full electric guitar ensemble execution of Steve Reich’s iconic work "Electric Counterpoint," performed by electric guitar quartet Dither, guitarist Mark Stewart, and friends, recorded at a New Sounds Live at Brookfield Place in 2015. All thirteen parts were performed live, (not one live, and twelve from backing tracks, as the work is usually done) – in this impressive concert recording from the Winter Garden.
