#4296: Music for Cello
Hear new music for cello, where Ashley Bathgate plays music by Ted Hearne and Christopher Cerrone, Kate Ellis plays Donnacha Dennehy, and Mariel Roberts plays Mario Diaz de Leon.
Listen to the fluid and romantic unaccompanied Cello Suite No. 1 by J.S. Bach, as played by Yo-Yo Ma, Mstislav Rostropovich, and Jan Vogler, along with a contemporary answer to J.S. Bach’s six Cello Suites. Listen to parts of a six-movement suite of cello works, “ASH,” written for cellist Ashley Bathgate of the Bang on a Can All-Stars by the composers collective known as Sleeping Giant. Hear electroacoustic music by Sleeping Giant composer Ted Hearne who regularly exploits dance music and pop sounds, along with music by Christopher Cerrone, also of Sleeping Giant, who adds layers and layers of pre-recorded cello and extends the resonance of the cello in a long digital reverb.
Then, hear Dublin-based Irish cellist Kate Ellis in a work by Irish composer and Princeton University professor Donacha Dennehy. who is a besides, and the Founder of the new music group, Crash Ensemble. There’s also work by composer Mario Diaz de Leon who works in a place where contemporary classical composition, experimental electronic music, extreme metal, and creative improvised music get in a cage together. From his recent, Cycle and Reveal, listen to his collaboration with cellist Mariel Roberts, “Irradiance,” where the lowest string is tuned down to G from C (\m/!). Pulses orbit in and out, competing with frenzied noise loops and spacious riffs, which all build to an “ecstatic climax of anarchic noise” (Bandcamp.)
Plus, listen to Michael Gordon's electronically amped-up work, "Industry" with its call for a "tube screamer" which helps to distort the cello, as played by Maya Beiser.
