#4310: Acoustic-Electronic Hybrids
Listen to cello, voices, violin, guitars and drums, in hybrid electro-acoustic settings by supergroup Whistling Arrow, Norway’s Lumen Drones, Charles Rumback and Ryley Walker, vocalist-composer Julianna Barwick, and cellist Ashley Bathgate.
Whistling Arrow is a sextet of violins and recorders from Laura Cannell, Andre Bosman's electronics, percussion and drums from Charles Hayward, together with mallet-struck prepared guitars of Ex-Easter Island Head. The sound mines “modern ritual” music in something of a jazz-folk-rock “epic jam with a pot-luck aesthetic.” Then, hear guitarist Ryler Walker together with Chicago drummer Charles Rumback in something like Americana space-folk-jazz. Also, hear the amplified Cretan folk lute (lauto) and drums by the duo Xylouris White, from their recent record, Mother.
Then, listen to music from composer-vocalist Julianna Barwick from an A.I.-triggered environmentally responsive soundtrack called Circumstance Synthesis with musical progressions created by Barwick, in tune with the New York City sky. Also, hear work for cello and electronics written for Ashley Bathgate by Robert Honstein from a six-movement suite of cello works, “ASH,” written for her by the composers collective known as Sleeping Giant. - Caryn Havlik
