#4324: New Releases, Jan. 2020

New Sounds | Jan 31, 2020

Hear new releases from the UK folk singer Sam Lee, Cuban pianist-composer Roberto Fonseca, and from banjo master Bela Fleck together with kora master Toumani Diabate.

There’s Afro-Cuban chamber music from Cuban pianist and composer Roberto Fonseca, whose other influences, rap, funk, reggaeton and electronic music, also manage to find a way onto his latest record, Yesun. Also, hear a preview of a record of music by banjo master Bela Fleck and kora master Toumani Diabate, due out in March.

Then, hear new music from a record by the Apollo Chamber Players with guest  Vanessa Vân-Ánh Võplaying đàn bầu, a Vietnamese single-stringed zither. The piece, by Alexandra du Bois, is called “Within Earth, Wood Grows” and is the musical interpretation of a line in the I-Ching. Listen to a bit of ‘Man vs. machine’ music from Chicago guitarist Jeff Parker, best known for his work with Tortoise, where musicians improvise on top of a hot drum pattern along with bass and other sequenced sounds.

Hear new music by Sam Lee, the British folk singer, song collector, broadcaster, and activist. Hear both his reworking of the ancient folk song “The Moon Shines Bright” which features Elizabeth Fraser (of the Cocteau Twins) and “Balfanen,” which Lee learned from his late mentor, the Scottish storyteller and ballad singer Stanley Robertson. These are both from his latest, Old Wow.

Plus, listen to a reworking of the Duke Ellington tune, “In a Sentimental Mood” by producer Rafiq Bhatia, and music in tribute to the late Dutch cinematographer Robby Müller by SQÜRL, the noise/drone-rock band– of filmmaker and multi-instrumentalist Jim Jarmusch and drummer Carter Logan.
