#4330, Musicians From the 1980s (New Sounds-Style)

Hear a look back at where the show once was in the 1980's (or so) with music by Algerian trio Djur Djura, Syrian singer Abed Azrie, Japanese multi-instrumentalist and dance music composer Yas Kaz (Sankai Juku), and guitarist Pat Metheny with the late keyboardist Lyle Mays. Plus, music from Norway’s Ketil Bjørnstad and his quartet and music by French avant-prog-chamber-rock band Art Zoyd.

Listen to music that floats and that has a lot of space, from Norwegian pianist-composer (and novelist) Ketil Bjørnstad, whose quartet included cellist David Darling, guitarist Terje Rypdal, and drummer Jon Christensen, who passed away in Feb. 2020. Then, hear music by Parisian-based Syrian-born Abed Azrie, who sets to music Sufi poems, and classical Arabic poetry.

There’s also music from guitarist Pat Metheny and the late keyboardist, composer, and arranger Lyle Mays (who also died in Feb. 2020), with their co-billed album, As Falls Wichita So Falls Wichita Falls. Listen to music by Yas-Kaz, aka university-trained percussionist, Japanese artist Yasukazu Sato. Plus, hear music by Art Zoyd from France, who combined prog-rock, and avant-chamber music by modern composers.  - Caryn Havlik
