#4365, Music for Layered Voices

New Sounds | May 12, 2020

For this edition of New Sounds, listen to music for layered voices, by Sarah Davachi, Collectress, Julianna Barwick, Lesley Flanigan, and Brian Eno.

Collectress are a quartet of multi-instrumentalists from London and Brighton who might play cello, guitar, violin, piano, electronics, synths, saw, or percussion. However, on their tune, “Roaming Bones,” they have created woven layers of vocals and well-directed mischief. Then, from New York composer, vocalist and sound sculptor, Lesley Flanigan, hear a work where voice is again the primary sound source, and wordless vocals at that. On her track “Can Barely Feel my Feet,” from her record, Hedera, she invites you toget lost in the glacial architecture of Flanigan's music, a place where even the most simple and exposed sonic elements are transformed by the power of the human voice.” (Hannis Brown, 2016)

Sample some  music made of the many vocal layers of composer, vocalist, and producer Julianna Barwick from her record, Nepenthe. Also, hear Canadian sound artist and electroacoustic composer Sarah Davachi, and her work, “For Voice,” with multiple layers of Camille Hesketh’s voice, from the 2017 record, All my Circles Run.

Listen also to music by composer, performer, installation artist and computer music veteran. Michael McNabb, an alum of Stanford's Center for Computer Research in Music and Acoustics – it’s his piece “Orbital View.” Plus, Brian Eno's ambient classic, Music for Airports. -Caryn Havlik
