#4366, Music for Multiples
Hear Steve Reich’s “Vermont Counterpoint,” from Claire Chase, a work by Irish composer Donnacha Dennehy featuring multiple violas of Nadia Sirota with multiple violas da gamba of Liam Byrne, and a work for multiple harps from Field Works and harpist Mary Lattimore.
Listen to “Vermont Counterpoint,” a now classic work by Steve Reich for multiple flutes, or soloist Claire Chase and layers of her flute. Then, hear music from Grammy-nominated clarinetist David Krakauer and South African composer/pianist Kathleen Tagg and their 40 layers plus of prepared “piano orchestra” and clarinet. Listen to a work by accordionist and forró specialist Rob Curto, inspired by Nigerian traditional musicians and simulating Brazilian pandeiro, and cast over a drum circle of piano samples, called “Demon Chopper.”
There’s music by Irish composer Donnacha Dennehy for the violist Nadia Sirota, which harnesses the possibilities of instrument multiples - layers of her viola, and that of Liam Byrne on viola(s) da gamba. Then, from the producer and musician Field Works (aka Stuart Hyatt), listen to a collaboration using Indiana bat sounds and multiple layers of harp by harpist-composer Mary Lattimore. Listen also to Estonian composer Arvo Pärt’s work, “Fratres,” in the version for 12 cellos - three moving parts, two drones, and far-off percussion. - Caryn Havlik
