#4391, New Sounds of Morocco
Listen to music by Bab L ‘ Bluz, a Moroccan-French power quartet who combine desert blues and propulsive Gnawa rhythms, singing words of freedom in the Moroccan-Arabic dialect of darija. Then, hear Moroccan-born, New York-based singer/composer/sintir (bass lute) player Hassan Hakmoun, who comes from one of the leading families of Gnawa musicians.
There’s music by Moroccan-born singer Amina Alaoui, from her record, Arco Iris, which takes into account flamenco music from Spain, fado music from Portugal, Arab-Andalusian music and Brazilian choro. Listen also to music from the trio 3MA, who are the Moroccan oud maestro Driss El Maloumi, Malian kora master Ballaké Sissoko, and the Malagasy valiha wizard, Rajery. [A valiha is a tube-zither, while the oud is found in Arabic classical music, and the kora is 21-stringed lute-harp of griots in Mali.]
Hear a rare collaboration between a classical orchestra, the Andalus orchestra from Tetouan, under its founder Abdessadaq Chekara and the Michael Nyman Band, in Nyman’s work, “The Upside Down Violin.” Also, listen to a German- Moroccan collaboration with music by the trio Dissidenten and guest musicians – the Tamil singer Manickam Yogeswaran, the Moroccans Noujoum Ouazza and Mennana Ennaoui on mandolin-cello and vocals, and oud/guitar player Roman Bunka. Plus, vocal acrobatics in mawals (improvisations) from the Moroccan-born Israeli cantor Emil Zrihan who sings not in Hebrew, but in Arabic.
